Welcome to the memorial page for

Walter Alonzo Julian

May 16, 1950 ~ August 19, 2012 (age 62) 62 Years Old
Walter A. Julian, 62, died Sunday, August 19, 2012, in Lexington, SC. A native of Greenville, he was a reporter, editorial writer, and copy editor for a variety of newspapers, including the Hickory Daily Record, the Greenville Piedmont, The Greenville News, and, most recently, The Post & Courier. Walter received his B.A. in English from Clemson University (1972). He served in the U.S. Army from 1972-1974 before receiving an M.A. in journalism from USC (1975). In addition, he completed the teacher training program at Clemson in 1999 and was a public school teacher both in Florence and Charlotte. In 2009, he began work as a freelance writer and editor.
Walter was an intelligent, gentle, and witty man, and his many talents included painting, woodworking and furniture-making, photography, and writing. He had completed two book-length manuscripts—one a novel, Sour Dog Man, and the other an extended essay on his battle with melanoma. His short story "Sharpshooters" was published in The South Carolina Review, and he was at work on a second novel, Store-Front Churches. Walter was an avid reader, especially of history, and loved music, cats, travel, and the perfect sport: baseball.
Mr. Julian is survived by his beloved wife, Joy Pilkington, of Lexington; mother Jackie Long, of Greenville; daughters Oakley Julian, of Baltimore, and Meredith (Taylor) Gaskins of Spartanburg; and granddaughter Olivia Gaskins. Walter was predeceased by his father, Earl Julian; his sister, Dr. Linda Julian; and his brother, Wilton Julian.
Walter's life will be celebrated with family and friends in a private memorial service on Saturday. Because Walter was a lover and owner of cats—including Mallory and Zeke and survivors Zach, Zora, and Allie, we ask that donations be made in his memory to Pets Inc., an animal shelter in West Columbia, SC (http://www.petsinc.org).
A loving son, husband, father, and friend, Walter will be greatly missed. He had a unique perspective on life and a great passion for living it.
