Sally Lynn Carlson, age 75, of Columbia, SC, passed away on Thursday, October 5th, 2017.
Sally was born December 10, 1941 the daughter of Robert and Ruth Ballard. She grew up in Michigan City, IN and graduated from Elston Senior High School in 1960. On December 10, 1960, Sally married Leonard Robert Carlson. In the summer of 1961 they headed to Dubuque, IA where her husband entered Wartburg Theological Seminary to prepare for his life-long career in ministry. This 56 year journey took them from Dubuque IA to Osnabrock ND, to Ohio IL, Pontiac IL and Chicago IL, until in 1997 they arrived in Columbia SC.
Sally is survived by her three children: Cindy Lynn (Mrs. Christopher Rohaly) of Kokomo, IN, Keith Leonard Carlson (Jeffrey Taylor) of Taylors, SC and Sandra Jean (Mrs. Jeffrey Ludt) of Elgin, SC. Three Grandchildren: Matthew Rohaly (Annette), Anna Rohaly Marrah (Joshua), and Thomas Rohaly. Three Great-Grandchildren: Henry Rohaly, Nathan Marrah, and Isaiah Rohaly. In addition she is also survived by her sister, Nancy Kahn and her husband Robert Kahn, along with Nieces and Nephews from her side of the family. Sally was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Leonard Carlson, her parents, and her sister, Phyllis Luscomb.
Sally entered the workforce as a secretary and served as a legal secretary for three years in Pontiac IL. From 1977-1997 she worked as a Warehouse and Office Manager for a Lubricating Oil & Grease Company in Chicago IL taking early retirement in 1997 prior to the move to Columbia SC. She was employed as an Executive Administrative Assistant for a Logistics Company in Columbia until her retirement in 2007. In addition to her employment opportunities, Sally was also very active alongside her husband in ministerial work. She sang in the church choirs for 30+ years, directed a choir for one year, served as Pastoral Assistant during worship services, and was active in the ELCA Women’s Groups and Bible Study Groups.
The funeral will be held on Friday, October 13th at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 3909 Forest Drive, Columbia, SC at 11 am. You may greet the family prior to the service beginning at 10 am. Memorials may be given to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
