Clarence Franklin “Sandy” Sanders, 93, passed away peacefully in the home of his loving daughter and caregiver, Rosemary and her husband, Bill, on February 28, 2016. Sandy was born on March 1, 1922 to the late John A. and Nora Moody Sanders of Bamberg, SC. He spent his childhood in Bamberg excelling in team sports and in 1941 was rewarded a scholarship to USC to participate on the football team. His college life was interrupted by the start of WWII. He joined the Navy in 1942, serving for 4 years in the Pacific Ocean Theater in PT boat squadron 23. In 1947 he married Johnnie Hogg of Barnwell and was blessed with four children and many grand and great-grands. He was retired from SC DNR.
He was an avid USC sports fan and spent his last moments on earth watching the USC women’s basketball team claim another victory.
Sandy is survived by daughters, Cheryl Boozer-Hogan of West Columbia and Rosemary Vriesema of Chapin; son, John F. Sanders of Lexington; and brother, Dr. Francis Sanders of West Chester, PA; six grandchildren, Jonathan Sanders, Joshua Sanders, Kevin Haltiwanger, Paige Steele, Cheri Jackson, and Allison Boozer; and twelve great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his son, Philip; and four brothers: Willy, J.A., Fred, and Claude Sanders.
A memorial service will be held at Mt. Horeb UMC, 1205 Old Cherokee Rd., Lexington, SC at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2016. Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m. prior to the service.
