Arlene went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 16, 2017. She was born in Statesville, NC on October 11, 1925 to Edward Granville and Arlene Almand Foster. Arlene was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Thomas Grady Shuler. She is survived by her daughter, Angie and son-in-law Joe Foster, grandsons Brandon Porter and Keaton Foster, daughter-in-law Mary Porter, and great grandsons Lawson and Owen Porter.
Arlene was a graduate of Meredith College in Raleigh, NC. She later taught at Arden and Hyatt Park Elementary Schools in Columbia and Pineview Elementary School in West Columbia. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa International Teachers' Sorority and past President of the Fedelis Zeta Chapter. Until she was no longer able to attend, she was an active member of Washington Street United Methodist Church. She worked for many years as a volunteer in the Washington Street Soup Kitchen and was honored in 1996 as United Methodist Women's "Woman of the Year".
Arlene loved to travel and was blessed to be able to do so extensively. Whether by car, plane, or boat, Arlene was always ready to go. Most of all, Arlene was a loving and devoted wife and mother, a doting grandmother and great grandmother and loyal friend to many.
The family wishes to thank her many friends who were so faithful to visit her these last few years and the staff at NHC, West Columbia who took such good care of her when she was unable to care for herself.
Memorial services will be held at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 19th at Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Lexington Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Washington Street UMC Soup Kitchen, 1401 Washington Street, Columbia, SC 29201.
