Dr. Pettus was the most caring and encouraging faculty member that I had the pleasure to work for at USC. He taught me how computers work in the most basic, fundamental way so I could effectively complete my job task. I have never forgotten his kindness.

Dr. Pettus was my favorite professor at Carolina. He was an inspiration for my career in electronic design and a guiding light in many other ways. In the early seventies, he was a driving force behind the major transformation of the electronics labs, advancing them from fifties-style equipment and methods to the latest. He also introduced computer design and the then-new microprocessor into the curriculum. My education was profoundly enriched by his efforts and I will always be deeply grateful.

Dr. Pettus was my major professor at USC, one of his first students since he arrived my sophomore year. I learned a lot from him, both in and out of the classroom. He will be missed.

First and foremost my condolences to the Pettus family. Dr. Pettus was one of the many professors at USC/Engineering that sincerely took interest in students learning and education. He was one of the instrumental forces behind me continuing in the Engineering field.
