Gilbert-Woody Ray Vaughn, 74, passed away December 21, 2020. A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 26, 2020 at Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Lexington Chapel.
Woody was born March 20, 1946, to the late Albert David and Lottie Laura Vaughn. While he was a resident of the Midlands since 1970, Woody was born and raised in the Great Smokey Mountains in and around Hendersonville, NC, and was very proud of his Cherokee heritage. He loved nature, photography, and electronics. He was president of Ridge Amateur Radio Club in Batesburg-Leesville where he made many dear friends and worked to increase younger membership in the club. Woody often said “When the cell towers go out, ham radio will be the lifeline.”
Woody retired in 2013 after 40 years of service as a Lab Tech at Allied Signal, later named, Honeywell Industries and Shaw Industries. While working there, he made many friends and remained in touch after retirement.
He leaves behind his wife of almost 40 years, Bonnie Hayes Vaughn of Gilbert; daughter, Laura Jean Vaughn of Atlanta; son, David Marshall of Gilbert; his precious grandson, Jorah Sterling Vaughn of the home; sister-in-law, Donna Hayes; two brothers-in-law, John Edwards and Bruce Haney, both of North Carolina, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Vaughn was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert David, Jr, and Hugh Vaughn, and a sister, Ella Jean Haney.
The family wishes to extend appreciation to all their friends for their prayers and support during Woody’s long illness and a special thank you to the staff at Lexington Medical Center, Wellmore Therapy and Rehab, and Compassionate Care Hospice for their kind care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Woody R. Vaughn or, in honor of Jorah S. Vaughn, to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charleston, Gadsden Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
