Walter G. (Gene) Grant Obituary

Walter G. (Gene) Grant, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, was born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1941, in Chester, South Carolina. He passed away peacefully on May 29, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, dedication, and love. Gene was the cherished son of Lucille and Floyd J. Grant. He is survived by his loving wife, Myrtis Grant, and his older brother, Wylie Kent Grant. He was preceded in death by his brother, Larry J. Grant and his sister-in-law Patty C. Grant; Myrtis’s sister, Phyllis Joyner; and step son, Eddie Rawl.

Gene proudly served his country for 20 years in the United States Air Force, including a tour in Vietnam and distinguished service with the Presidential Aircraft Unit at Joint Base Andrews. His commitment to excellence and integrity was evident throughout his military career.

Following his retirement from the Air Force, Gene continued his passion for aviation as Director of Maintenance at BankAir in Columbia, SC, where he worked for more than 30 years. His expertise, leadership, and work ethic made a lasting impact on colleagues and friends alike.

Gene was a devoted husband to Myrtis Grant and a loving father to Sheri Bennington (husband Mark), Bobby Grant, and Joey Hardee (wife Devona). He was a proud grandfather to Joseph, Hogan, Blaine, Saylor, and Edie Raine Hardee, Casey and Sidney Prestipino, Anja Grant, Candice Knollman, Kara Bennington,  Amanda Rawl and great granddaughter, Jovie Rose Knollman.  He leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, whom he loved very much.

An avid golfer, Walter was a longtime member of Ponderosa Country Club, where he enjoyed many rounds of golf and the company of good friends. His warmth, humor, and generosity touched the lives of all who knew him.

Gene’s life was defined by his unwavering devotion to family, his service to country, and his kindness to others. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A burial will take place at Ft Jackson National Cemetery at a future date to be announced when determined.
