Teddy Alton Orvin, 87, passed Thursday, April 23, 2026 at Lexington Medical Center. He leaves his daughter, Sonja Lynn Orvin Odom of North, South Carolina; three grandchildren, Ericka Summer Odom Sightler, married to Timothy Lee Sightler (Leesville, South Carolina), Stephen Andrew Orvin, Jr., married to Cynthia Caroline Knight Orvin (Effingham, South Carolina), and Stephanie Louise Orvin Brigman, married to Gregory Michael Dustin Brigman (Florence, South Carolina); four great-grandchildren, Ellie Grace Floyd, Tinsley Katherine Louise Brigman, Phoenix Lynnlee Sightler, and Cynthia “Thia” Mae Orvin; one sister-in-law, Wanda Gail Alberson, married to Ansel Wade Alberson (Belton, SC); and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends. Teddy is predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Nancy Louise Williams Orvin (born in Pelzer, SC); son, Stephen Andrew Orvin, Sr. of Gaston, SC; six brothers, six sisters, five brothers-in-law and five sisters-in law.
A native of South Carolina, he was the son of the late Steadman Andrew and Daisy Henrietta Wadford Orvin, born in St. Stephen on September 19, 1938. His father, Steadman Andrew Orvin, after contracting tuberculosis while living at a construction camp charged with building the Santee Dam that formed Lake Marion, passed in 1943 when Teddy was four years old.
Teddy joined the National Guard of the State of South Carolina on November 15, 1955. After graduating from Ware Shoals High School in 1957, he attended Columbia Commercial College receiving a Business Admiration Degree and graduated with the 13th Class of the Palmetto Military Academy, Commissioned Second Lieutenant Ordnance Corps on October 4, 1962. In June 1964, he started a civilian break then re-enlisted. Teddy was a lifetime member of the Acacia Lodge No. 94, A.F.M. Freemasons and an active member of the JAMIL Temple in Columbia. He was a very gifted musician, playing by ear his 1957 Gibson electric guitar for decades and loved Elvis Presley. Teddy was an entrepreneur, purchasing and vastly improving operations and selling businesses. With 23 total creditable years of military and South Carolina National Guard Service, he retired in September 1998 receiving numerous military awards and decorations. He is listed in the Veterans Legacy Memorial.
Teddy was an enthusiastic fisherman, spending many hours on South Carolina lakes and rivers, especially the Santee Dam.
He was of the Baptist faith, and his favorite Bible verse was John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life".
Teddy will be remembered for his dedication, smile and love for music.
Graveside services will be officiated by Chaplain Bartley Wilt at Fort Jackson National Cemetery with Military Honors on Friday, May 8, 2026, promptly at 1:00 p.m.. All attendees need to arrive 30 minutes early.
