Sylvia Ann Backman Obituary

Sylvia Ann Cooper Backman, 66, went home to Jesus on Wednesday, March 22, 2023.

Sylvia grew up at and loved Thornwell Children’s Home where she was past president and still very active in their Alumni Association. She attended the University of Georgia and was a big Georgia Bulldog fan.

She met her husband, Roger Backman in 1984 and they were married on February 14, 1985. Sylvia and Roger founded Unicorn Printing Co. that year and she remained it’s president until her retirement in 2022.

She was awarded The Small Business Person of the Year by the Lexington Chamber of Commerce and many other awards for her community service.

Sylvia lived to help others. Over the years she was involved in WIRE, Mission Lexington, The Red Cross, Girl Scouts, Sister Care, Nancy K Perry homeless shelter, CERT, Leadership Lexington, Lexington County Choral Society, Lexington Police Dept., Lexington County Sheriff’s Dept., Kids Day, Lexington Chamber of Commerce, and many more charities and causes. She was the caregiver for her disabled husband, her deceased mother-in-law and father-in-law as well as other elderly folks in the community.
Her biggest love was Boiling Springs UMC. She was the church secretary at the time of her death. Over the years she was Lay Leader, Chair of Worship, Chair of Outreach and held almost every other position at one time or another. She taught Sunday School, preached occasionally and sang in the choir. She was eager to do anything that needed doing at BSUMC.
