In a world that often seemed bent on breaking spirits, Susan Barakat stood tall as a beacon of courage, love, and thoughtfulness. Born on January 17, 1954, in Columbia, South Carolina, Susan carried these qualities throughout her life, leaving a lasting mark on everyone who knew her.
Susan was a longtime resident of Lexington, South Carolina, and a retired carrier with the United States Postal Service. She was a dedicated and hardworking woman who took pride in her job and in providing for the people she loved. Susan worked tirelessly throughout her life to ensure that her children and grandchildren always had a place to call home and security they could depend on, a reflection of the deep love and devotion she carried for her family.
More than anything, Susan loved being a mother and grandmother. Her grandchildren brought her immeasurable joy. She shared a particularly special bond with her granddaughters, Karol Nicole, Scarlett Jolene and Kylie Paris, whom she loved dearly and spent much of her time with. They meant the world to her, and she often found comfort, laughter, and companionship in their presence. Her love also extended to her grandchildren, Liliana and Wesley.
Susan was also a true artist at heart. She had a remarkable ability to create whatever came to mind. She enjoyed painting beautiful artwork, working with pottery, crocheting handmade items, and crafting unique jewelry. She even participated in craft shows where she proudly shared her creations. Through her art, Susan expressed the same creativity and passion that she brought to every part of her life.
A woman of perseverance, Susan’s life reflected the words of Helen Keller: “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” Her strength, resilience, and unwavering love for her family will never be forgotten.
Susan is survived by her mother, Cathryn White; her children, Kaitlin Dillard and John, III; her grandchildren, Karol Nicole, Scarlett Jolene, Kylie Paris, Liliana, and Wesley; and her siblings, Charles White, Miriam Raines, and Cheryl Wilson.
She was predeceased by her father, Charles White and a sister, Scarlett Marchant.
Susan’s memory will live on in the lives she touched, the art she created, and the family she loved so deeply. She will be remembered as a courageous, loving, and thoughtful woman whose spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
A memorial service in Susan's honor will be held on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Barr-Price Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Lexington Chapel 609 Northwood Road, Lexington, South Carolina. A visitation will follow the service at the funeral home.
