Sara Jane Wessinger

Sara Jane Wessinger passed away peacefully on the evening of December 23, 2025.

Born on January 5, 1947, in Columbia, South Carolina, Sara Jane was a 1965 graduate of Brooklyn Cayce High School. Upon graduating from the University of South Carolina Nursing School, she began working at Baptist Hospital in downtown Columbia.

In July 1972, Sara Jane moved to Boston and began a 41-year career at Massachusetts General Hospital. After five years on the hospital floor, Sara Jane transferred to the Research Department working under Dr. William Harris, a renowned hip replacement surgeon, who became Sara Jane’s mentor and dear friend.

Sara Jane retired in 2012 and moved back to South Carolina in 2013, where she remodeled and lived in the family’s 100-year-old homeplace in Lexington.

Sara Jane treasured and was grateful for all the life-long friendships she shared in both Boston and Lexington.

Sara Jane was predeceased by her parents, Newman and Adelaide Wessinger. She is survived by brothers, David (Valorie) and Steven (Anita); nephew, Clinton (Priscilla); and numerous cousins who she dearly loved.

Special thanks to cousins Margaret (Meg) George, Donna Lee and Mary Violet Fechtel for their commitment to Sara throughout her lifetime and especially during her recent illness.

Visitation will be held at Sara Jane’s house at 141 Wildlife Road, Lexington, on January 24, 2025 from 2pm to 4pm.
