James Russell “Rusty” Attaway, 69, of Batesburg-Leesville passed away Monday, January 12, 2026. Born in Batesburg, on February 11, 1956, he was the oldest son of James E. “Scooter” and Mary Griffin Attaway.
Rusty began working for Marvin Aull Wholesale Clothing Company while still attending Batesburg-Leesville High School and in 1981 he began a long career at Michelin Tire Corporation in quality control. While at Michelin he was among the crew that made the first tire at the Lexington plant.
In his spare time, he enjoyed golf trips with the guys and served as an assistant coach with the boys’ sports teams, both soccer and baseball. Following his retirement, he enjoyed playing golf and singing karaoke.
Surviving are a son, Eric A. Attaway, grandson, Easton J. Attaway, his mother, Mary G. Attaway, brothers, Tony Attaway and Todd Attaway (Pam), sisters, Judy Derrick (Richard) and Cindy Attaway (Mike McCartney), and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Jeb S. Attaway, his father, James E. “Scooter” Attaway, and sister-in-law, Georgia Anne Attaway.
A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday January 23, 2026 at Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Historic Batesburg-Leesville Chapel with the Rev. Lisa Isenhower officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
