Rudolph “Rudy” Strickland, son of the late David Hunter and Lula Victoria Strickland, passed away peacefully at the Lexington Community Hospice House--Agape Care on May 13, 2023. He was born in Princeton, NC on February 20, 1932. He is survived by his wife, Emma; children, Karen (Terry) Stewart, Leah (Keith) Hall, Scott (Laney) Strickland; four grandsons, and four great grandchildren. He was predeceased by four brothers and four sisters.
Rudy spent the majority of his childhood on tobacco farms along with his parents and 7 older siblings. He moved to Raleigh at the age of 17 to work as a routeman for National Linen Service. At 18, he was transferred to Wilmington where he met his wife, Emma, of 71 years. As he worked through the ranks at National Linen, he moved with the company 10 times over his 46 year career along with Emma and their children. He managed plants in Columbia, SC; Alexandria, VA; North Charleston, SC; and Greenville, SC. Upon retirement, he and Emma moved back to Columbia, SC to be near their children and grandsons. In retirement, he discovered he had a gift for carving canes. He enjoyed spending time with his four grandsons, his many dogs, seeking treasures at "His House", morning meetings with his friends at McDonalds, talking about current events with neighborhood buddies, collecting feathers for his hats, and working in the yard and his garden. He served as an officer and Sunday School teacher for the Friendship class where he and Emma enjoyed fellowship with many friends over the years. He loved life and saw it as an adventure, never met a stranger, and was never at a loss for words.
