Richard (Dick) M. Cameron, Sr.

Richard, 85,  was born in Christianburg, VA on June 1st, 1941 to Evie Lee Bauknight and Reverend Virgil Alonzo Cameron and was baptized in November 1941 by his father. His journey towards South Carolina began in December of 1941, when his father became active in the US Army. The family settled in West Columbia, SC where he grew up, graduating from Brooklyn-Cayce High School in 1959. Following his graduation, he attended Newberry College briefly, and completed his college education from the International Technical College (PA, USA) with a 6 year study in printing apprenticeship.

In 1960 his father officiated the marriage between Richard and the love of his life, Roxiana (“Ann” or “Roxy”) Taylor Cameron at Our Savior Lutheran Church in West Columbia, SC. They were married 66 beautiful years and survived by 3 children, Ellen C. B. (Hardy) Youmans, Jr. of Irmo, SC, Richard “Matt” (Lynn) Cameron Jr. of Irmo, and Jane C (Benjy) Osteen of Cross Hill, SC; grandchildren, Patrick Cummings of Greenville, Mikala B. (Brandon) Giles of Irmo, Elizabeth “Libby” Wheelis of Irmo, and grandchildren through marriage, Mebane Y. (Bobby) Connelly, Amy Y (Matt) Chester of Shirley, SC, and Hardy (Richelle) Youmans, III of Hardeeville, SC. Richard and Ann had 10 great-grandchildren, Swain and Eli Cummings, and through marriage MacKayla and Brayden Connelly, Teresa Joanne “TJ” VonWaldner, Thomas and Conley Chester, Hunter, Landon, and Colton Youmans; brother in law, Mike Prater; sister in law, Trudy T Smith; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews he adored.

Dick was predeceased by his parents; only sibling brother, David L. Cameron; brother in law, Benjamin A. Smith; sister in law, Dorthy T. Prater; nephew, John Cameron; and Dick’s beloved granddaughter in law, Rachael Hawkins Cummings.

Richard was a Journeyman Printer and worked at State Printing Company for 45 years. He was an explorer scout in the BSA, and later was assistant Scout Master at Bethel Lutheran Church for BSA Troop 366 earning the Order of the Arrow. He and Ann sang in choirs for all of their life together; chorus at numerous churches and at Brooklyn Cayce High School, choir at their home church, Bethel Lutheran, as well as for their local group, The Chapin Chirpers. Richard loved attending the Highland Games in his Cameron family kilt, where he could celebrate his Scottish heritage that he was so proud of. He loved traveling across the USA and Canada with his wife in their Roadtrek, with their friends- Dickie and Bonnie Lowman, and Johnny and Dolores Derrick. As a father, he was extremely proud of his children’s military service to their country. He enjoyed attending races with his brother-in-law, Mike Prater. Richard was a devout Christian, spreading God’s word through song and the life he lived. Across his community, he was so loved by everyone who crossed his path; they always felt comfortable asking for his advice, listening to his jokes, and sharing their love of family.

His family would like to express their gratitude to everyone who helped care for Richard during his long journey with cardiovascular illness. Thank you to Dick’s dear friend, Mike Moore, for assisting him in continuing to worship despite his physical challenges. Thank you to Bill Siebers, Dick’s long-term physical therapist who helped to encourage him to fight for his strength. A special thanks to Three Oaks Hospice staff, especially the compassionate care provided by: Matt, Jessica, Gail, RNs Caitlin, Nadiyah, Liz and Jill, Cait and Elena, CNA Cherlyn, MSW Brittany, and Chaplain Chris. Your kind spirit and all of your prayers truly touched the heart of him and the ones he loved.

Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, July 16th, 2026 at Bethel Lutheran Church. Visitation will be 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church, 2081 Dutch Fork Rd. White Rock, SC 29177.
