It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a true hero, Retired U S Army First Sergeant Roland H. J. "Rocky" Panter, known affectionately by many as "TOP". Born on September 29, 1951, in Fürth, Germany, Roland lived a life of purpose, service, and unparalleled bravery.
Roland dedicated 23 years of his life to serving our country in the U.S. Army. Throughout his distinguished military career, he was awarded numerous medals, including two Bronze Stars. His enduring courage, leadership, and dedication to his troops were emblematic of his character. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well." Roland embodied this ethos in every aspect of his life. His legacy as a carrier for the United States Postal Service was equally notable, as he brought joy and connection to those on his route. He drove the Special ED bus for Lexington School District 1 which was one of his most memorable and cherished jobs. His love for woodworking mirrored the meticulousness and creativity he brought to all his endeavors, whether on the battlefield or at the crafting table.
Roland is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Lisa Goodson Panter; his daughter, Julie (Kevin) Brown; bonus children, Deidra (Lon) Woodall and Clint (Kelly) Browning; and his cherished grandchildren, Trace McLaughlin, Madison McLaughlin, Samantha Browning, CJ Browning, and Christian Browning; four great-grandchildren; longtime military friend, Glenn Richie; beloved furbabies, Lacey, Claire, and Murphy.
He was predeceased by his parents, Jack Panter and Maria "Lucy" Reed; and his brother, Charles Panter. Roland's memory will forever live on in those who knew and loved him.
A graveside service will be held 10am Thursday, January 8, 2026 at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Lexington Chapel is assisting the family.
