Oren S. Fletcher

Graveside services for Oren Soule Fletcher, 97, of Orangeburg, will be held Friday, June 9, 2023 at 11:00 am at Woodridge Memorial Park. Barr-Price Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel is assisting the family.

Mr. Fletcher died Sunday, June 4, 2023. Born in Kershaw, he was the son of the late Oscar Alexander and Mamie Adalee Barfield Fletcher. Upon his graduation from Bethune High School, Mr. Fletcher served in the United States Navy in communication intelligence during World War II. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1950 with a B.S. degree in civil engineering and spent his career with the South Carolina Department of Transportation. During his career, he served in several positions, retiring as Director of Construction. He played a major role in the post-World War II expansion of the state highway system and the construction of the state’s interstates.

He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, Transportation Research Board, and was a registered professional engineer. He served as a member of the Civil Engineering Advisory Board at Clemson University and was a member of the Advisory Board of the Department of Civil Engineering Technology at Midlands Technical College.

Surviving is his wife, JoAnn Reynolds Fletcher, son, William H. Fletcher; stepsons, Todd Helms (Samantha) and Clay Helms (Wendy); stepdaughter, Susan Booth (Dustin); a grandson, Blake; seven step grandchildren; and sisters Jean Bowers and Mary Ann Adams. Mr. Fletcher was predeceased by his first wife, Jacqueline Fleming Fletcher; a son, Milton O. Fletcher; a sister, Myrtis Blackmon; and brothers, James, Jesse, Oscar, Robert, and William.
