Norma Markland Zwart Obituary

Mrs. Norma Markland Zwart, 94, of Lexington, South Carolina passed away peacefully on Friday, December 26, 2025. She was was married to the late Wayne G. Zwart who passed away in 2016, after more than 60 years of marriage. Mrs. Zwart loved her beloved sons, David Zwart (Brenda), Stephen Zwart (Wendy), Alan Zwart (Harriet), and Keith Zwart, 7 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Grandma Z was born in Fall River, Massachusetts on June 21, 1931. She was the only child of the Honorable William and Yvonne Chenard Markland. Norma received her education in Massachusetts. She was a director of church music in Fall River, Massachusetts; Milton, Florida; Portsmouth, Rhode Island; Columbia, South Carolina; Gilbert, South Carolina; and Leesville, South Carolina. Norma was the original director of the Classic Singers Chorus for over ten years. She taught piano lessons and was a voice and music teacher. Norma was devoted to her faith, and loved her Lord. She was a member of Mt. Horeb Church in Lexington. Norma cherished the memories of all her voice and piano students; and her dear friends. She will be greatly missed.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 31, 2025 at Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Historic Batesburg-Leesville Chapel.  Burial will follow at Mt. Horeb Church Cemetery in Lexington. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to support the education of a student wishing to be a church musician attending Newberry College. Serving as active pallbearers will be John Paul Zwart, Daniel Morbitzer, David Morbitzer, Christopher Cooper, Clay Burgess, Reed Boykin, Landon Amick, Kellen Monroe and Christopher Garduce.
