Mrs. Mary B. Lewis, 97, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 28, 2025. She was born on April 16, 1928 in Gaffney, South Carolina to the late Joe C. and Mildred Black. Mary graduated from Winthrop University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics. She began her teaching career in Loris, South Carolina. Mary and her husband, Mr. L.L. Lewis moved to Leesville, South Carolina in 1953, where she taught at Gilbert High School until her retirement in 1986. She volunteered with the Lexington County Peach Festival for over 50 years as well with other volunteer work with LICS and Meals on Wheels. Mary enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her children, Robert Lewis (Debbie) of Leesville, John Lewis (Lesia) of Leesville, Joe Lewis (Leah) of Aiken, and Mary Ann Allen (Doyle) of Texas; grandchildren, Jeremy Lewis, Ben Lewis, Kayla Caudill, Emily Lewis, Emory Lewis, Jason Lewis, Daniel Allen, and Carlie Allen; great-grandchildren, Ava, Joshua, Legree, Coleman, Benson, and Addisyn; and special friend, Syrembia Taylor.
Mary was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, L.L. Lewis, brother, John Black, and sister, Lousie Carson.
The funeral service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 3, 2025 at Shiloh United Methodist Church – Gilbert with the Rev. John Kronz and the Rev. Allen Wolfe officiating. Burial will follow at Ridge Crest Memorial Park – Batesburg. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 2, 2025 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Historic Batesburg-Leesville Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shiloh United Methodist Church, 1000 Spring Hill Road, Gilbert SC 29054 or to a charity of one’s choice.
