Mary Alice G. Wallace Obituary

Mary Alice Grumbles Wallace was born on Monday, August 7, 1939, the second child to George Washington and Alice Eoline McKnight Grumbles in Walterboro, South Carolina. Mrs. Grumbles passed away when Alice was 4 days old due to complications from the delivery. The Lord blessed that Edna Elizabeth Carter joined the family and raised Alice to be a healthy and happy young lady.

The family moved from Walterboro to Sumter County, where Alice received her grade school education and graduated from Edmunds High School in 1957. Upon graduation, Alice entered and completed Nursing Training at the Columbia Hospital of Richland County School of Nursing at the Old Columbia Hospital on Harden Street.

Alice graduated Nursing school on June 23, 1961, and began working at the Old Columbia Hospital Labor & Delivery from 1961 to 1969. She worked at Providence Hospital from July 1969 to 1970 as staff nurse of Labor and Delivery. In 1970 she was recruited by Mrs. Medhurst, her favorite nursing teacher/mentor, to Lexington County Hospital now known as Lexington Medical Center. Alice was appointed the first Head Nurse for their Obstetrics program. In 1977 Alice left the hospital to work in private practice; first in the office of Dr. Albert Thomas followed by Dr. O. H. (Hank) Powell, where she worked until her retirement in April, 2006. She will forever be remembered by her numerous patients as their absolute favorite nurse. Many continue to remember her countless acts of kindness to them.

On Friday, June 16, 1967, Alice was joined in Holy Matrimony to the Love of Her Life, Charles Kenneth Wallace. To this union Alice and Chuck were blessed with 3 beautiful girls, Susan Elaine, Amy Lynn and Jennifer Leigh. In June, Alice and Chuck would have been blessed to celebrate 56 years of marriage together. To God Be the Glory!

A woman of faith with a heart for the Lord, Alice was a faithful and active member of Beulah United Methodist Church where she served as Church Nursery Attendant and Choir Member until her health failed.

Alice was predeceased by her parents; her siblings, Elizabeth Grumbles Newton, George Robert Grumbles; grandson, Ryan Wallace Crout; stepmother, Edna Carter Grumbles and sister-in-law, Anne Williams Grumbles.

Alice is survived by her loving and devoted husband Chuck, her three daughters, Susan Elaine (Billy) Crout, Amy Lynn (Barry) Evans, Jennifer Leigh (Biff) Stalvey; grandchildren, Joshua (Ashley), Katy and Allie Crout; Parker, Peyton, Addie Lynn and Patrick Evans; Emily, Maddie and Aubrey Stalvey; great-grandchildren, Hensly, Wesley, James and Vivianna; sister, Helen Grumbles Thomas and brother-in-law, Robert (Janie) Wallace and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
