There are not enough words to express the love we have for Big Papa
Gilbert - Marty Ray “Big Papa” Harmon passed away way too soon on Thursday, January 7, 2021. Born in Richland County he was a son of Bobby Ray Harmon and the late Mary Katherine Watts Harmon. Mr. Harmon was a member of First Baptist Church of Gilbert and worked over 20 years for Lexington County School District 1 before retiring as Head Custodian from Gilbert Elementary School where he touched so many lives of the staff, teachers and students. Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Historic B-L Chapel is assisting the family.
He is survived by his son; Nathan Harmon(Kristen), grandchildren Sawyer, Emery and newborn Berkley, brother Mike Harmon(Marie), and sister Christy Smith(Duane) and several nephews and nieces. Mr. Harmon was predeceased by a grandson, Reed and his mother.
Marty was always helping others, a totally selfless man that cared more for his family than himself. His world revolved around his grandchildren. Big Papa spent many days taking Sawyer fishing, reading books to Emery and his last day he was able to see the smile of his newest grandbaby, Berkley. We know he is up in heaven now putting the worm on the hook for Reed as they throw that line out one more time. He was always there: every ballgame, every birthday party and every holiday. Marty also had a knowledge and passion for farming, one he passed along to his family. His weekly place at the breakfast table will never be able to be replaced, as no man can ever fill those shoes. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Gilbert FFA, c/o Derrick Cooper, Gilbert High School, 840 Main Street, Gilbert, SC 29054.
Please take the time to leave us a story or your comments about Marty, as there will be no service at this time, but a Celebration of the life of Marty Harmon at a later date.
