Obituary

Martha (Marie) Hartley Gunter
September 2, 1942- September 16, 2023

Pelion, South Carolina – Surrounded by her loving family, Martha (Marie) Hartley Gunter, 81, of Pelion, SC, went home to her Heavenly Father on September 16, 2023.  She was born in Lexington County on September 2, 1942, to Inez Hartley and William Levi Hartley.  Mrs. Gunter attended Batesburg-Leesville Schools graduating from Batesburg-Leesville High School in 1961.

Mrs. Gunter was employed for many years by Michelin Tire Company until she retired in 2000.  A woman of deep faith, she was a lifelong member of Boiling Springs United Methodist Church during which time she assisted with many community ministry outreach efforts.

Mrs. Gunter was known for her love of cooking.  If you were lucky enough to visit her home during mealtime, you would probably be treated to a meal worthy of a Thanksgiving feast! Her three active sons and husband kept her busy, but she always found time to devote herself to making sure their needs were met. She and her sisters shared such a special bond and always enjoyed being in one another’s company.  She was especially attached to her cats and dogs and could often be found with one of them snoozing on her lap; though, the loves of her life were her six beautiful grandchildren.  As their “Granny”, she doted on them as only a grandmother could, and they gave her much joy.

Mrs. Gunter was predeceased by her parents, Inez and Levi Hartley; her siblings, Rachel Hembree, Donley Hartley, Doris Lewis, Barbara Snider, and Sarah Cooper; and her daughter-in-law, Jenny Gunter.  Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Roy MacArthur Gunter; and her sons, Joey Gunter of Pelion, SC; Scott (Kathy) Gunter of Waynesboro, GA; and Derrick (Amber) Gunter of Pelion, SC.  She was blessed with six grandchildren, Katelynn (Kyle) Miller; Gray, Caroline, and Clayton Gunter; and Jackson and Neely Kate Gunter; and soon-to-be great-grandchild, Shep Edwin Miller. Mrs. Gunter is also survived by her sisters, Mary Clark of Gilbert, SC, and Linda (Charles) Kirkland of Leesville, SC; many cherished nieces and nephews and lifelong friend, Barbara Smith Reaves of Leesville, SC.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Amedisys Hospice of Columbia, SC, Willie Dell Jenkins, and Wanda Caraway for their loving and attentive care during her illness.

A service will be held at Boiling Springs United Methodist Church, 2373 Calks Ferry Road, Lexington, SC on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at 12:00 noon. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Barr-Price Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, is assisting the family.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or to Boiling Springs United Methodist Church.
