Martha Jean Smith Thompson Obituary

Born June 2, 1938, in Columbia, SC, Martha Jean Smith Thompson was the daughter of the late Virden Smith and Queenie Williams Rish. She was predeceased by her sister, Shirley Anne Smith and her brothers, Frank O. Smith, Thomas L. Smith and Willie L. Smith. She is survived by her five children, Ed (Linda) Lundeen, Debbie McCarthy, Tommy (Jan) Pruitt, Robbie (Sara) Pruitt, and Danny (Josephina) Pruitt. She was Grandma Jean to nine grandchildren: Kelli Chavis, Eddie Lundeen, Laura Lundeen, T.J. Lundeen, Dylan Pruitt, Emily Pruitt, Tyler Pruitt, Tanner Pruitt, and Daniel Pruitt, Jr. and ten great grandchildren. 

Jean was a faithful member of Grace Baptist Church of West Columbia. She adored working with the children’s ministry and enjoyed many travel adventures with her church family. 

She retired from Allied Chemical in 1990 and started her own housekeeping business which kept her busy for many years. 

She was known for her quick wit and penchant for sarcasm. She loved to find a good bargain and worked to maintain a fabulous wardrobe. An avid canner and baker, she enjoyed making jams, jellies, and preserves. 

Visitation will take place at Barr-Price Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, on Wednesday, June 25, 2025 from 5-7 PM. A celebration of life at Grace Baptist Church will be held on Thursday, June 26, 2025 at 11 AM. 

Burial will take place in the Smith family plot at Sharon “Crossroads” United Methodist Church in Swansea following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Grace Baptist Church Food Pantry 416 Denham Ave. West Columbia, SC 29169.

The family would like to thank Lexington Medical Center’s nursing staff, social workers and Palliative Care Team and also Lexington Community Hospice House for their compassionate care.
