Marjorie Elizabeth Oxner Spears Obituary

Marjorie Elizabeth Oxner Spears, 103, of Lexington, SC went home to be with her Lord and Savior, on March 26, 2025. Born July 29, 1921 in Leesville, SC, she was the daughter of the late Quinton Oxner and Mattie Moore Oxner. She was a 1939 graduate of Batesburg-Leesville High School, and at the time of her death, was believed to be the oldest living graduate from B & L. In 1944, she met an Arkansas boy who was in the service at Ft. Jackson at the time. After only a 4 month courtship, they married before he left to go overseas during World War II. She always told everyone it was “love at first sight”!

Mrs. Spears  is survived by her children, Mike Spears (Nancy) of Leesville, Pamela Spears Steele of Lexington, and Elaine Spears Taylor of Lexington; grandchildren, Jason Spears (Danielle) of Lexington, Brian Spears (Laura) of Prosperity, Sandra Spears of Irmo and Ryan Shirley of Lexington; along with numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors, all of whom she loved dearly.

She is predeceased by her loving and devoted husband of 70 years, Thomas Nathaniel Spears; her parents, Quinton and Mattie Moore Oxner; three sisters, Cleo Oxner Addy, Jeanette Oxner Sheppard, and Mildred Oxner Derrick; and her son-in-law, Ralph “Pete” Steele, Jr.

Mrs. Spears was a faithful member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church for over 60 years. She was grounded in her faith, and raised her children in that same manner, always with a selfless and unconditional love. While she was able, she looked forward to attending church,  and greeting and hugging her many friends. She loved to garden and tend to her yard, even until age 99. In her Heavenly Home, she is enjoying many beautiful gardens filled with her favorite flowers. She always thought of others above herself, and was never too busy to share a hearty laugh, a kind word, and a helping hand. All glory to God for her amazing long life! Well done, good and faithful servant!- Matthew 25:23
