Gilbert—Funeral service for Master Sergeant Melvin James Black, USAF, Retired, 90, will be conducted 11:00 AM Saturday, November 11, 2023 at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Lexington SC with the Rev. John Derrick officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 10, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Historic Batesburg-Leesville Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Matthews Lutheran Church, 1273 Calks Ferry Road, Lexington SC 29072.

Mr. Black passed away Tuesday, November 7, 2023. Born in Leesville, he was a son of the late Oza E. and Maude Long Black. He was member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, former firefighter/rescue men, and a retired Master Sergeant with the U.S. Air Force.

Surviving are his wife, Sandy Porth Black; son, Jerry J. Black: sister, Geraldine Black; grandchildren, Michelle M. Black, Jennifer M. Black, and Lisa L. Alley; great-grandchildren, Gwen Black, Zach Alley, Jackson Alley, and Chloe M. Black.

He was predeceased by son, Ricky D. Black; daughter, Kathy Marie Black; brothers, J.T., Von, Dial Black, Leonard Black, and Ronald Black; sister, Annette Rodgers and Ozalee Price; and a great-grandchild, Bradley Black.
