Luther Pinckney Koon, a man well-known for his wit and zingy one-liners, arrived at his true Home peacefully on July 27th, 2021 at the age of 76, after telling his doctor, "Zonk me out, Doc, I'm supposed to be in Heaven!" and telling his family, "I want my tombstone to say 'Told you I was sick; Wish you were here.'"
This humor, among many things, will be missed by those who survived him: his wife, Jean (introduced by Luther as "my first wife"), his three sisters, Thelma, Seretha, & Carolyn (remarked by Luther as "I feel like a rose between three thorns"), his three children, Andy, Alma, & Beatrice (proclaiming "You're not my favorite child!"), and his three grandchildren, Emma, William, & Ivory-Rae (stating, "I'll send ya'll home with a pack of whistles").
Born on November 5th, 1944, to parents Harvel and Lucile, Luther lived a playfully mischievous life, reminding everyone, "If I didn't get a spanking every day, I wasn't living it right!" Though he never lost his penchant for jokes, Luther still took many things very seriously - among them being his 28 years of service to the state of South Carolina at the Department of Mental Health, his lifelong commitment to the Boiling Springs community and church, his friends at "The Breakfast Club," his broody chickens, his ice cream, and Lowe's.
To anyone who met him, he became an immediate friend. To anyone who knew him, he became an honorary family member. To anyone who needed him, he became their answered prayer. Dependable and willing are two words that could not be shown any more clearly than how Luther lived them. Driving anywhere in the state was speckled by a game of "I Spy... the cabinets I built there, the kids I taught here, the garden I planted there..." The impact of his wide legacy ran deeper than he ever knew, and his final moments (and hospital visitation policy) were completely overwhelmed by the returned love from countless family and friends. Though Luther will be immeasurably missed, he would want everyone to take comfort in knowing he no longer suffers from pain, sadness, fear, or Fox News.
Visitation will take place on Friday, July 30th, 2021 at 1pm followed immediately by his memorial service at 2pm, both at Boiling Springs United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Boiling Springs United Methodist Church 2373 Calks Ferry Road Lexington, SC 29073 of which Luther was a pivotal part. Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Lexington Chapel, is assisting the family.
