Luther James Padgett, Sr., of Gaston, South Carolina, passed away on March 12, 2026, at the age of 66.
Born in St. Augustine, Florida, he was the son of the late L.J. Padgett and Patricia Padgett.
Luther was a proud and dedicated United States Navy Veteran, serving his country honorably for 16 years as a Petty Officer Second Class. During his service, he completed a world tour aboard the USS Nimitz and also served aboard the USS Stark with HSL-32 Squadron, as well as the USS Ticonderoga. He was aboard the USS Stark during the tragic attack in the Persian Gulf on May 17, 1987, where his bravery and the courage of his fellow crew members helped save the ship after a devastating missile strike. His service and heroism were recognized by South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson.
Throughout his military career, Luther received numerous honors, including the Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Unit Commendation, Southwest Asia Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Navy Expeditionary Medal, and multiple Good Conduct Medals. He was a proud Navy man through and through.
Following his military service, Luther continued his hardworking nature through careers in HVAC and as a truck driver. Outside of work, Luther enjoyed watching football and baseball, had a deep love for history, and was known as a true John Wayne enthusiast. He had a natural ability to make people laugh, loved to cut up and joke, and carried a big heart. Above all, he loved his family deeply and cherished the time he spent with them.
He is survived by his sister, Debbie Padgett Sightler (the late Dave Sightler); his children, Luther “James” Padgett, Jr. (Lori), Jackson Walter Padgett, and John Wayne Padgett (Scarlet); his grandchildren, Haiden, Marcus, CJ, Riley, Alyssa, Kyndoll, and Taylor; and his great-grandchildren, Eli and Riverlyn; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, with Rev Henry Cooper officiating. Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Lexington Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to his caregivers Ms. Betty and Ms. Christy for their exceptional care and friendship.
