The family of Leslie H. Bass, age 83, of Gaston, SC, is saddened to announce his passing on October 13, 2021. Les grew up in Cayce, SC and attended First Baptist of Cayce and later Westside Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Brookland Cayce High School class of 1956. Les was an outstanding athlete and “lettered” in baseball, football and basketball. He was the 1956 1st Draft Choice as a pitcher by the then Milwaukee Braves. Les played 7 years of professional baseball and was MVP of the Pioneer League in 1959. His love of baseball continued while working for Colite Industries in West Columbia, SC. Les was a successful coach leading Congaree Post 90 American Legion All-Star team to the World Series.
Leslie is survived by his mother, Dorothy Bass (MamaBass) of Lexington; sister, Brenda Hook (Davis) of West Columbia; brother, Larry Bass of West Columbia; sister, Kathy Hamby of Murrells Inlet, SC; daughters, Tanya Watford (Donald) of Lake Wylie, SC and Julie Jorgenson (Randy) of Milton, FL. Leslie also has six grandchildren along with six great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his father, Henry Bass, and his younger brother, Earl Bass.
A graveside memorial service will be held Friday, November 5, 2021, at Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church, 3050 Leaphart Road in West Columbia. The service begins at 2:00 pm with visitation to follow.
