Larry Bortel Obituary

Larry Bortel (Pop), 87, of Irmo, SC passed away on August 16, 2023.

Larry was born on March 14, 1936 in Ilion, NY to the late Leona Stickles Bortel and Robert C. Bortel. Many happy memories from his childhood included his grandfather Leo Stickles. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Bortel.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife and best friend of 64 years, Maureen Bortel; daughter, Kathy Coskrey (Ernie) of Lexington, SC; daughter, Laurie Ladd (Larry) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and daughter, Pam Bembry (Kip) of Martinez, GA. He leaves behind eight grandchildren: Abigail, Christopher, and Rosemary Coskrey; Emma and Jack Ladd; and Maggie, Molly, and Beau Bembry. He is also survived by his nephews, Mark and Todd Bortel, and his niece Jackie Bortel Maffia. Other loved ones left behind include his brother-in-law and friend, Mike Mason (Suzanne), their children, Julie and David, his sister-in-law, Laura Mason, her children, Tony and Krissy, his good friends, Maurice Wright and Shawn Peeples, and his beloved German Shepherd, Maggie.

After graduating from Ilion High School in 1954, Larry joined the United States Marine Corps at age 17. He served honorably for four years before attending Mohawk Valley Community College. He went on to a long career at Sperry Univac/Unisys, Harris Tarkett, and Mannington Flooring, where he was a respected manager and mentor.

In retirement, Larry volunteered for many years with animal rescue organizations and mentoring children. He had a wonderful sense of humor, always making his grandchildren laugh with his imaginative, and sometimes slightly inappropriate, stories and antics. He enjoyed conversations with everyone he met. And he never met a dog he didn’t like (and want). He loved his family well and will be greatly missed.

A celebration of Larry’s life will be held at a later date with family and friends. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family on the tributes section. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital,, or Homeward Bound Pet Rescue,
