LaVerne Powell Shaw

LaVerne Powell Shaw, 77, passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2020.   She was born in Clearwater, SC to the late Quincy E. and Margaret Whaley Powell.

LaVerne was a faithful member of Shepherd Church of the Nazarene.  She was the one that always checked in on all the members and remembered everyone’s birthday.  LaVerne had a great love for music and was the Director of Music at several churches.  She sang with the group Sounds of Praise for a number of years.  LaVerne also sang in retirement homes and many different churches throughout her life.   She loved her family, church family and extended family.  LaVerne never met a stranger.

She is survived by her two daughters; Kathy (Glenn) Leaphart and Cindy (John) Griggs; her brother, Chuck “CW” (Karen) Powell; Sister-in-law Sue Powell; grandchildren, Renae Downs, Nathan Leaphart and Mark Griggs; her great-grandchildren, Brianna Leaphart, Kaitlyn Leaphart, Ashley Downs and Abigail Downs, and a number of nieces and nephews.

LaVerne is preceded in death by her husbands Virdree Hall and Lanny Shaw.  She is also preceded by her brothers, Paul Powell and John Powell; her sister, Carol Rhoden and a grandson, Timothy Griggs.

There will be a Memorial Service held Sunday, September 20, 2020 at Shepherd Church of the Nazarene in Lexington at 10:00AM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in  LaVerne’s honor to Shepherd Church of the Nazarene, 119 Ball Park Rd. Lexington, SC  29072.
