Judith Cooper Singleton, affectionately known as Momma Judy, 81, of Gaston, South Carolina, went home to the arms of her Lord and Savior on Monday, July 15, 2025.
Today, we honor the remarkable life of a woman whose heart knew no bounds, whose faith anchored her soul, and whose love shaped generations. Judy was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend—she was a radiant light in the lives of everyone she encountered.
Born on July 1, 1944, in St. Petersburg, Florida, Judy grew up with a strong sense of purpose and devotion. After graduating from St. Petersburg High School, she continued her education through junior college and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina. It was there she rejoined her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Duke Singleton. Together, they built a marriage that spanned 61 beautiful years—an extraordinary example of partnership, faith, and unwavering love.
Judy and Duke stepped out in faith together to build Tropic Aire Patio Gallery and Santa’s Closet—businesses that quickly became community staples, not only for their offerings but because of the people behind them. For five decades, Judy worked side-by-side with Duke, transforming their shop into more than a store—it became a haven. She didn’t just serve customers; she made them feel like family. Her warmth turned strangers into friends, and her sincerity brought people back year after year. Judy’s true gift was in making others feel seen, heard, and cared for.
Faith was the cornerstone of Judy’s life. She was a charter member of Trinity Baptist Church and the last original remaining member of the church choir—where she sang for over 50 years with a voice that truly echoed heaven. Judy lived her faith with quiet strength and deep compassion. She loved her church family dearly and brought that same spirit of love and service into every relationship she nurtured.
Momma Judy is survived by her loving and faithful husband of 61 years, her Duke. Children; Julie Underwood, Roger (MaryBeth) Singleton, and Chris (Ashley) Singleton. Grandchildren; Darcy (Chris) Hollingsworth, Todd (Bianca) Sherer, Taylor (Carmen) Singleton, Dallas Singleton, Carrie (Jacob) Balda-Sherer, AnnaGrace (Noah) Brady. Grandchildren; Madelyn Giles, and Catherine and Christopher Hollingsworth. She also leaves behind her devoted sister, Linda Longacre. She was preceded in death by her parents, Quentin and Nell Cooper, her brother-in-law, John Longacre, and her son-in-law, Randy Underwood.
Pallbearers are Tom Disbrow, Don Boyce, Russ Belk, Gene Dunn, Tim Sheffield, Dustin Oehler, David Holland, Steve Sexton, and Larry Jordan.
Momma Judy found joy in the simple pleasures—crocheting, sewing, crossword puzzles, and of course the Hallmark channel. But above all, her heart was always her family. She lived a life of grace, humility, and unwavering devotion—a true servant-hearted woman who made every space warmer just by being in it.
She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and service. The kind of legacy that lives on in every life she touched, in every story retold, and in every act of kindness inspired by her example. She will be missed more than words can express, but we rejoice in knowing she is now safe in the arms of Jesus.
A celebration of Judy’s life will be held Saturday, July 19, at Trinity Baptist Church, 2003 Charleston Highway, Cayce, SC. Visitation will begin at 1:30 PM with the service to follow at 3:00 PM, led by Reverend Dr. Eddie Coakley. Burial to follow at Celestial Memorial Gardens, 3111 Delree Street, West Columbia, SC 29170.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Trinity Baptist Church Choir.
