Jessie "Garvin" Cockrell Obituary

 

Mr. Jessie “Garvin” Cockrell, 79, of Monetta passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. He was born on January 19, 1947 in Aiken, South Carolina to the late Jessie William Cockrell and Camilla Long Cockrell. Garvin worked for many years in textile industry where he worked for Owens-Corning Fiberglass. He was a proud United States Army veteran, serving in the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1972. Garvin later married the love of his life, Freida Miller on March 13, 1968 and they shared over 58 years building a family together. He loved the Lord, and was a devoted lifelong member of Bethel Baptist Church where he was apart of various positions in the church such as serving as a deacon, video sound technician, transportation committee, sign changing commit, and audit committee. Garvin also was a member of the Kings Men Sunday School Class, Senior Citizens Group, and the Men’s Brotherhood. Garvin was member of the American Legion Ridge Spring Post #133, Disabled American Veterans - D&D Whitman Post of Leesville, and TCAT Car Club Member. He also was active in his community, serving 2 terms on the Monetta Town Council. Garvin was a life long Gamecock fan and he loved his family.      

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Freida Miller Cockrell; son, Mark Cockrell (Libby); brother, Paul Cockrell (Geanie); grandchildren, Dalton Cockrell, Waylon Cockrell, and Caden Cockrell; and several nieces and nephews. Garvin was predeceased by his sister Janette Mitchell; grandsons, Colin Cockrell and Alden Cockrell; nephew, Michael Paul Cockrell; and great-niece, Lynn Padgett.

Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 28, 2026 at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Preston West and Robert Padgett officiating. Burial will follow at Ridge Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bethel Baptist Church Brotherhood, 114 Bethel Road, Monetta SC 29105. The family would like to give a special thank you to Heather and Denny with MSA Hospice for their love and care during Garvin’s illness. Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Historic Batesburg-Leesville Chapel is assisting the Cockrell family with arrangements.
