Jennie Hill Owen

On August 10, 2025, surrounded by love, Jennie Hill Owen completed her remarkable journey of 102 years.  Born on February 3, 1923 in Sumter, South Carolina to Kenneth Hill and Lucille Barnes Hill, Jennie lived a life marked by music, faith, family and an unwavering joyful spirit.  In her later years, she made her home in Signal Mountain, Tennessee where she continued to brighten the lives of all who knew her.

 Jennie's life was rich in love and deep purpose. She shared 66 wonderful years with her devoted husband, Sam E. Owen, Jr., and together they built homes in various cities filled with warmth, laughter, and music.  Their son, Sam E. Owen, III, was the pride of their hearts, and though both Sam Jr. and Sam III passed away before her, Jennie carried their love with her always.  

 Music was the thread that ran through Jennie's life.  A proud graduate of Blue Mountain College in Mississippi, and advanced studies at Columbia University in New York, she shared her gift by teaching piano for many years and remaining active with the Columbia Music Teacher's Association.  Her students remember her not only as a talented teacher, but as a patient encourager who opened the door to a lifelong love of music.

 Her faith was central to her life.  A longtime member of Shandon United Methodist Church in Columbia, South Carolina, and later at Signal Crest United Methodist Church in Signal Mountain, Tennessee, Jennie was active with her Circle and faithfully sang in the choir.  The fellowship, services, and music she found there were a source of joy and strength.

 Jennie's home was a reflection of her heart - beautiful, welcoming, and full of life.  She was a gifted cook and gracious hostess, making every gathering special.  Family and friends knew they would be met at the door with warmth, a smile, and something delicious to eat.

 In her final years, Jennie was blessed with the care and companionship of the staff at Alexian Village, to whom her family extends heartfelt thanks for their compassion, patience, and kindness.

 Jennie is survived by her daughter-in-law, Kathy Owen of Signal Mountain; grandsons Edward Owen of Signal Mountain and Stephen Owen of Nashville, Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews who will carry forward her legacy of love, kindness, and joy.

 She will be remembered as a woman of grace, music and faith - one who found beauty in every day and left the world brighter than she found it.

 A private graveside service for family will be held in Batesburg, South Carolina.

 In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Signal Crest United Methodist Church, Signal Mountain, TN or Shandon United Methodist Church, Columbia,SC.
