Jane Sowell Obituary

Jane Weatherford Sowell, 69, of West Columbia, SC, passed away on March 22, 2024. She was born in Columbia, SC to the late Willie E. Weatherford and Ann L. Weatherford, as the youngest of four children. Her father was a Hump Pilot in the US Army Air Forces in World War II when he married Jane’s mother in Shanghai, China in 1946. Jane grew up in Savannah, GA, graduating from Savannah High School, class of 1972. After high school, she attended the University of South Carolina, where she was a coquette in the marching band and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy in 1977.

On June 24, 1978, at the chapel on the USC Horseshoe, she married her former college of pharmacy medicinal chemistry professor, who was a widower with two young sons. She was a loving mother from the first day of their marriage. They built the family home in West Columbia and resided there 45 years together, raising four children, including two daughters of their own. Jane worked as a pharmacist, retiring in 2013. During her career, she held positions at various local community pharmacies, the Health Department, the Cancer Center for Treatment and Research at Richland Memorial Hospital, and the inpatient central pharmacy at Palmetto Health Richland. She also served as an instructor in the pharmacy technician program at Midlands Technical College and as a hospital lab instructor for the pharmacy doctorate program at the USC College of Pharmacy. Both her daughters went on to be pharmacists, and Jane had the pleasure of teaching them and working alongside them during their schooling.

Jane was known to have a creative side. She directed drama pageants for her church, dabbled in photography and made slide shows to music for the local summer swim team, sewed Halloween costumes for her children, and crafted ornaments, wreaths, and holiday décor for a festive home. She was a good cook and baker and loved to eat. She lived for vacation, enjoying many cruises and trips to the beach throughout her lifetime. Jane also loved her home and the beautiful water view from her living room. It was there that she passed peacefully and comfortably, surrounded by loved ones.

Jane is survived by her spouse, Joseph Walter “Walt” Sowell, Sr.; her daughters, Amanda Sowell Moyer and Susanna Sowell Holmes; her step-sons, Jason Guy Sowell and Joseph “Joey” Walter Sowell, Jr.; her six grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

The family is not planning to hold a funeral. Jane loved a good party, and she left this world around 4:30 pm on a Friday, just in time for happy hour in Heaven. That’s celebration enough!
