James "Jim" M. Blackwell

On the morning of April 24, 2023, James “Jim” M. Blackwell passed away peacefully due to natural causes at his home with his beloved wife Brenda, and “best friend” and adoring son, Troy, in Chapin, SC.

Jim was born in September 1944, to Henry and Mildred Blackwell in Savannah, GA, though he spent most of his life in the Columbia and Chapin area, attending Eau Claire High School in Columbia.

During his career, Jim began as a welder with Kline Iron and Steel, progressed to an inspector with Law Engineering, and after 20 years, he opened his inspection business, Structural Evaluations. When he retired and closed Structural Evaluations, he went on, with a partner, to open Palmetto Roads in Chapin. Although proud of each accomplishment throughout his life, his long marriage to his wife Brenda, and their two sons Travis and Troy, gave Jim his greatest joy.

Jim is survived by his wife Brenda; his son, Troy (and wife Melanie); 3 grandchildren, Haley, Emily and James, and great grandson Lincoln or Link (Emily’s son).

So many have touched our lives and provided support over these past months. We would especially like to thank Lighthouse Hospice for their caring support, our Pastor, Larry Hagerty, who lifted us with care, support, and prayers every step of our journey, and special thanks to Jim’s Childhood friend, Cyril Thomas Cole, who was there with Jim through long conversations, always ending with “I love you”.

Jim’s Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, May 25 at 6:00 pm, at St. Thomas Lutheran Church, 215 St. Thomas Church Road, Chapin, SC 29036. Visitation will be held in the Fellowship Hall at 5:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for memorial contributions to St. Thomas Church in Jim’s name.
