James Durham Hendrix Obituary

James Durham Hendrix May 7, 1948 – April 11, 2026 James Durham Hendrix, 77, of West Columbia, SC, passed away at his home, on April 11, 2026. A graveside service celebrating Jim’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church, West Columbia, cemetery.

Jim was born to the late Herbert Durham Hendrix and Grace Bush Hendrix. Jim’s family and their history were important to him. He was proud to be part of the 3 rd generation raised on land owned by his Hendrix family. He was also the 3 rd generation to leave this earth as a resident of that family land. Jim was a member of Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church for most of his years and will be buried there in the same cemetery as many of his ancestors.

Jim graduated from Brookland-Cayce High School in 1966. He worked through the years as a heavy equipment operator in Kentucky coal mines and on crews building roadways in South Carolina. Later on, he followed his father Herbert’s path of self-employment, running his own backhoe service. Once Jim retired, he enjoyed time with family.

Jim was affectionately known by the nickname “JuneBug”, a name he acquired from his paternal grandfather as a young boy. He enjoyed NASCAR, especially when Dale Earnhardt was around, and he probably knew every Gunsmoke episode by heart. He always enjoyed a good western show as well as rock-n-roll music. The Rolling Stones were one of his favorites. A special time in Jim’s life was when he was a Civil War Reenactor as part of a field artillery unit. He enjoyed the comradery, weekend encampments, and shooting cannons.

In late 2022, Jim was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer. He fought this disease for the last several years until it ultimately took his life. Jim was predeceased in life by his parents Herbert and Grace Hendrix, and partner Leslie Racicot. Jim will be deeply missed and forever loved by his sister, Susan Hendrix Gantt (Charles) of Lexington, nephew Christopher Gantt of Savannah, GA and niece Shawna Gantt Jordan (Brian) of Gilbert; former spouse Helen Hendrix of Kentucky; stepchildren and families of Billy Moore of West Columbia, Patricia Perry, Renee Burden and Casandra Moore, all of Kentucky.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim’s memory may be made to Mt. Hebron UMC, 3050 Leaphart Rd, West Columbia, SC 29169. Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Lexington Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
