James Nathaniel Hallman, 96, of West Columbia, SC, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 21.
James was the only son of Breese and Lucy Roof Hallman. Born September 26, 1929, James grew up in West Columbia, South Carolina. After graduating high school he attended Newberry College, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in education in 1950. He later received a Master’s in education from the University of South Carolina.
He served as a devoted teacher and administrator in several SC public school districts in Blackville, Laurens and later West Columbia. In 1964 he became the first principal at R.H. Fulmer Middle School in Lexington School District #2. He served in that position until his retirement in 1981.
He was a devout man in his Christian faith and a member of Mount Herman Lutheran Church. James always enjoyed his time and fellowship with his church family, having also previously been a long-time member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. He also served as the president of South Carolina Lutheran Men in Mission. Additionally, James enjoyed serving his community through volunteering with local chapters of Meals on Wheels, the Lions Club, and Thrivent Financial, serving in various leadership and service roles.
James is predeceased by his parents; his wife Margaret Shull Hallman of 53 years; and a grandson, Evan Henry Elbrecht.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Jean Shealy; his daughters, Janet Elbrecht (Edward) and Joan Hallman; and grandsons, Michael and Benjamin Elbrecht; along with other extended family.
James was respected and loved by many and will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held 11:00am Monday, March 2, 2026 at Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church with Rev. Gina Metze officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Meals on Wheels, Lions Club, Emmanuel or Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church. Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Lexington Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
