Mrs. Idessa Renew Smith Gulledge, age 85, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on May 12, 1940 in Saluda, South Carolina to the late Cleve and Ender Jones Renew. Idessa dedicated her life to her family and home. A proud homemaker, she found her greatest joy in caring for those she loved. Her days were filled with creating a warm, welcoming home, preparing meals that brought everyone to the table, and baking treats that became family favorites—especially her homemade biscuits, which were simply the best and lovingly remembered by all who enjoyed them.
Idessa was a loving mother and grandmother who never hesitated to speak her mind. Outspoken and strong-willed, she was known for her honesty, her sharp wit, and her unmistakable presence. She also had a gift for making people feel cared for, whether through a listening ear, a firm word of advice, or something warm from the oven. Her home was a place of comfort, laughter, and love, and it will forever remain the heart of her family. She is remembered for her strength, resilience, and the countless roles she filled with grace and determination. To her family, Idessa was truly a superwoman—no matter how many times life knocked her down, she always fought to get back up, face each challenge head-on, and keep going for the people she loved. Her legacy lives on in the many generations she helped shape.
Idessa is survived by her children: L.C. Smith, Jr. (Frankie), Deborah Stoudemire (Steve), Sandra Craps (Joel), Sharon Kinard (Denny), and Dorothy Smith (Timmy); 21 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her parents; first husband, L.C. Smith, Sr.; second husband, Troy Gulledge; a son, Robert Smith; a son-in-law, Marty Craps; and her brother, Tillman Renew.
