Heyward “Alex” Counts, 55, of Lexington passed away on Monday, December 25, 2023. A son of Heyward and Brenda Counts, Alex was born on September 14, 1968 in Columbia, South Carolina.
Alex is a graduate of Lexington High School and the University of South Carolina, earning degrees in Finance and Accounting.
Alex was a caring person with a kind heart who always put others first. His family and friends were very important in his life and he enjoyed spending time with them.
Alex’s two biggest loves were music and the Carolina Gamecocks. He supported all sports, especially football, baseball, and basketball. His musical talents included singing, playing the organ and playing piano at church for 41 years. He was a lifelong, dedicated member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where he was choir director, worship leader, and council member. He also served on countless committees such as finance, worship and music, and Christian education. He served as the Rich-Lex USC Alumni Board President and Gamecock Dugout Club Vice President. Alex was also a member of the Palmetto Mastersingers and the USC Concert Choir, performing at Carnegie Hall and the Holy Land.
At the time of his passing, Alex was the Grants and Agreements Coordinator at the Office of the Adjutant General. Previously, he was an Accountant for SCE&G and Spirit Telecom.
Alex is survived by parents, Heyward and Brenda Counts; sister, Jill Williamson (Todd), and brother, Chad Counts (Leigh); nieces, Susannah Counts and Courtney Counts; nephews, Weldon Williamson and Kaminer Counts (Kaytlin); great nephews, Boone Counts and Brixton Counts and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Alex is predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Alvin and Naomi Counts and maternal grandparents, Voight Enoch and Chloe Smith.
Visitation will be held at Barr-Price Funeral Home in Lexington on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 from 6-8pm. A Funeral service will be held Thursday, December 28, 2023 at 3pm at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Leesville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 210 Bethlehem Circle, Leesville, SC 29070.
Alex was very special to us and he will always remain in our hearts.
