Herschell Logan III Obituary

Herschell “Joe” Josephus Logan III, 89, of Saluda, SC, born in Greenville MS, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Joe was born on December 5, 1935, in Greenwood, MS, to Herschell Josephus II and Margaret Cooper Logan. He was a proud graduate of Auburn University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Fisheries Management in 1958. Following his graduation, Joe dedicated his career to conservation, first working at the Mississippi Game and Fish Commission and then at the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, where he served as a Fish Biologist and Chief of Fisheries for 30 years. His dedication to preserving the environment was recognized in 1996, when he received the First Fishery Conservation Award from the South Carolina Chapter of the American Fisheries Society, presented by Governor David Beasley.
After retiring from his distinguished career, Joe moved to Colorado, where he managed a ranch for two years. Later, he returned to Columbia, South Carolina, where he started Joe Logan Consultant Services, a pond consulting business. Throughout his career and beyond, Joe’s passion for the outdoors remained unwavering.
Joe will be fondly remembered for his devotion to his family. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he cherished time spent with his loved ones, especially teaching his children and grandchildren the joys of hunting, fishing, and playing pool. His love for the outdoors was matched only by his enthusiasm for skiing, boating, snowmobiling, archery, and all things related to nature. He was also deeply involved in his community, especially through the Optimist Club of Columbia, and had a lifelong love for his Carolina Gamecocks.
In his later years, Joe found great happiness in gardening at his home on Lake Murray, and his legacy of love and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Dianne M. Logan of Saluda; his sister, Lieulita L. Thomas (Erle); his children, Todd Logan (Shaunna) of Newberry, Shelley Logan West (Dan) of Columbia, Laura Studley (Shawn) of Fort Mill, Melanie Prewitt (Greg) of Columbia, Amy Eubanks (Jim) of Fort Mill; and his cherished grandchildren: Brooks Logan (Katie), Cooper Logan, Jack Studley (Alexis), Abby Eubanks, Andrew Eubanks, Beau Studley, Jay Eubanks, Turner Prewitt, Josh Eubanks (fiancé Ella Smith), Shay Studley, Jarrett Eubanks, and Lexi Andrews. He was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Lily Olivia Logan and Mila Sophia Studley.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend Herschell Josephus II and Margaret Cooper Logan Bell.
