Columbia - Grace Lewellyn Lovell, born October 5, 1944 passed away on Monday, February 3, 2020 after an extended illness. Grace was the daughter of the late George and Julia Lovell of Conway, SC. She is survived by her brother, Samuel George Lovell, III (Becky McPhatter) of Columbia, SC; niece, Natalie Lovell Sherman (Trey); grand nieces, Olivia and Greyson of Gray Court, SC; sister, Julia Carolyn Lovell of Sunset Beach, NC; nephews, Michael Lovell Rouse (Parker) of Columbia, SC and Nathan Ellis Rouse, also of Columbia.
Grace graduated at the top of her class from Conway High School in 1962. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Wake Forest University in 1966, where she earned Phi Beta Kappa membership. Grace also earned a master of library science degree from Indiana University and a master of divinity degree from United Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.
As an elder in the United Methodist Church, South Carolina Conference, Grace served pastorates in Bowman, Lancaster, and Lake View. Grace served as the director of Wallace Family Life Center in Wallace, SC. She retired after years of service for the state of South Carolina as a mental health counselor, in cooperation with the SC Conference of the UMC.
Grace lived a life of ministry with emphases on an inclusive church and social justice. She was intelligent, self-denying, charitable and humble. She made a difference in this world and she will be missed.
A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m., Sunday, February 16, 2020 at Main Street United Methodist Church with reception to follow.
