Ernest Russell, Jr. (Sonny) of Lexington, SC passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, February 16, 2020 at the age of 85. Mr. Russell was born on April 21, 1934 in North Charleston, SC to Elene Meads Russell and Ernest Russell Sr.
Mr. Russell is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Jones Russell; his children and their spouses, Ernie Russell (LaDonna), and Destiny Neblo (Stephen); grandchildren, Stacey Franklin (Jared), Kayla Russell (Cory), Brianne and Joshua Neblo, and Miranda Roberts; great-grandchildren, Raybon and Eli Franklin, Nevaeh Lucas, John Thomas, and Skylar Hawkins; brothers and sisters, Betty Evitts, Earl Russell, Bobby Russell, Stella Lewis, and Dorothy Weaver, all of Charleston, SC and Vernon Russell of Dover, Delaware. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was lovingly known as “Papa.”
He served in the United States Army for 20 years. Ernest and his family were stationed in Germany. He also served in Vietnam and retired as a First Sergeant in the Military Police at Fort Jackson. He was a policeman for the Town of Lexington and owner of East Main Street Car Wash. Later, he and his son, Ernie, Co-Owned Race Automotive. He was semi-retired and continued working as an employee for Car Quest until 2017. He was a faithful member of the VFW Lexington Chapter Post 8738 and enjoyed his work there.
A Memorial Service with full military rites will be held 2:30 p.m. Monday, February 24, 2020 at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
