Dr. Louis Nover Gruber, 85, of Lexington, SC died after a long illness on Monday, November 13, 2023. He was born in Schenectady, NY to the late Rabbi David S. Gruber and Mathilde (Tamara) N. Gruber. Dr. Gruber was a gentle and witty character who always had a joke up his sleeve. Dr. Gruber moved the Columbia area as a high school student where he graduated Dreher High School at the age of 16. He then went on to study at Harvard University. He graduated Medical School at MUSC and completed his Residency in Psychiatry at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. He enjoyed a colorful career treating some of the most interesting patients in New Orleans, San Diego, and Tulsa, before returning to William S. Hall in Columbia, South Carolina where he began as an aide while in school. He derived the most pleasure from his career teaching residents and medical students at Tulane, LSU, UCLA, Oral Roberts University, and the University of South Carolina. He also enjoyed writing books, articles, and short stories in his free time. Dr. Gruber is a Vietnam veteran who served as a psychiatrist in Japan. Dr. Gruber is survived by his wife of 49 years, Judith; and daughter, Talitha (Tali) Gruber; brother, Rabbi Mayer I Gruber, as well as many nieces and nephews all around the world.
The memorial will be held at St. Simon and St. Jude Episcopal Church in Irmo where he has been a devoted member for many years. Details will be made available once travel plans have been arranged for family hailing from places such as Israel, London, Texas, and Delaware.
