Dorothy “Dot” Buffington Metts, age 88, wife of George Ray Metts, passed away Sunday, September 10, 2023.
Born October 7, 1934, in Saluda County, Dot was the only child to the late Horace T. Buffington and Lois Jester Buffington. Mrs. Metts graduated from Saluda High School in the class of 1952 and graduated from Greenwood College of Commerce in 1953. Dot was a former member and served as treasurer of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a Den Mother for Cub Pack 75 of Saluda for ten years. She retired as a rural mail carrier after 20 years of service.
Mama Dot, as her grandchildren affectionately called her, enjoyed cooking and hosting her family gatherings in her home over the years. She was known for her famous fried chicken, rice and gravy, and homemade ice cream. Her grandchildren were the joy of her life. She truly was the heart of the home and a blessing to her family, friends, and community. Mama Dot exemplified the Bible verse from Proverbs 31:10: “A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.”
Surviving, in addition to her husband for 70 years, are her sons Kenneth R. Metts (Sharon) of Saluda, Rodney H. Metts (Sally) of Columbia, and Alan L. Metts (LeeAnn) of Saluda. She is also survived by many grandchildren and their spouses: Brittney and Carlos Alvarez, Desirey and Noah Suniga, Morgan Metts, Rebecca Metts, Jane Metts, John Metts, David and Mary Kate Metts, Lee Metts, Ryan Metts, Catherine Holder, Micah and Brandon Corbin, and Paul and Ashton Metts. Her great grandchildren include Tatum Holder, Braylee-Rae Holder, Ender Corbin, and Sara Metts.
She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Eleanor Metts and Glenda Metts, one brother-in-law, Jim Morgan, and a sister by choice Marianne White.
A graveside service will be held at Trinity Church Cemetery on Friday, September 15, 2023, at 3:00 PM. Visitation will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Bill Sawyer and his staff for their loving care for Mama Dot over the years.
