Don Norris, 84, of Columbia, SC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 after a short illness at Prisma Health Care Baptist Hospital. Don, a native of Benson, NC was the son of Wade V. Norris and Blanche Baker Norris. He served honorably as a medic in the U. S. Army.
Don was a graduate of Atlantic Christian College. He began his career at Peedin Steel Company in Raleigh, NC, and was then employed by Owen Steel Co. of Columbia, SC for over 35 years. After retirement, he worked part-time for Jackson-Elders Steel.
Don and his late wife, Barbara, loved boating at Lake Murray and traveling the inland waterway. They also spent many happy times at Litchfield Beach. He was a sports car enthusiast his entire life. It was said that Don could identify any car by year and make that was manufactured in the last 100 years. He enjoyed driving his red Miata MX5 around Columbia with the top down. Above all he and Barbara loved their English bulldogs and treated them like royalty, but the last one, Bobby, was the “King.”
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Brown Norris; his brother and sister-in-law, Phil and Jean Norris of Carolina Beach, NC. He is survived by his sister. Glenda N. Johnson (Rollins) of Smithfield, NC; his brother, Joe Norris (Miriam)of Raleigh, NC; and many loving nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his loving family and many wonderful friends.
Memorials may be made to Riverland Hills Baptist Church, 201 Lake Murray Blvd., Irmo, SC 29063. Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Lexington Chapel, is assisting the family. Due to Covid, a family memorial will be held when gathering is safe.
