Charles “Chuck” Urconis , 88, of West Columbia, South Carolina, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, December 20, 2022, surrounded by family. Chuck was born in Rita, West Virginia, to parents Kizzie and Frank Urconis. Chuck was only 17 years old when he joined the Army and was deployed to the front lines in the Korean War and went on to serve three more tours in the Vietnam War. Chuck was awarded the Silver Star for his bravery. He retired as Sergeant First Class after 21 years of service. Chuck eventually retired from the civil service on Fort Jackson.
He loved his family and always enjoyed large get-togethers. Chuck’s pinning of The Silver Star was featured in the book, The Mud Solider, which then was made into a motion picture in theaters, The Last Full Measure.
Chuck is survived by daughters Carolyn Urconis Smith, Debbie Urconis Black (Dave), and son David Urconis, daughter in law Jeanie Urconis, eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Linda Sue Urconis, son, Charles Keith Urconis and grandson, Daniel Victor Black.
Burial with military honors will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
