Charles Nichols Obituary

Funeral Services for Charles Maffett Nichols, 96, of Leesville, SC will be conducted Wednesday April 3rd at 2pm at Wittenberg Lutheran Church with the Rev. Keith Getz officiating. Interment will be private in the church cemetery following the service. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service in the church Commons area. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Wittenberg Lutheran Church 233 N. Lee St, Batesburg-Leesville, SC 29070.

Charles passed peacefully Saturday, March 30th in his home surrounded by family. Charles was born in Leesville, South Carolina on February 13, 1928 to Josephus Samuel and Hattie Vestus Nichols. He graduated from Clemson College in 1952 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He served in the United States Air Force from 1948-1952 with the rank of Corporal. He began his career with the federal government with the Department of Interior, Geological Survey where he did topographic mapping along the Eastern Seaboard. In 1960 he transferred to the newly established National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. During his career at NASA, he was instrumental in selecting sites for and construction of the satellite tracking system in locations worldwide. He retired from NASA in 1983 and returned to Leesville, SC. During his retirement, he published several books on his family genealogy. He was a Commander of the Leesville-Batesburg American Legion Post 61 and a devoted Meals on Wheels volunteer for many years. He was a faithful member of Wittenberg Lutheran Church and served in many capacities. He was a devout Clemson fan but enjoyed all sports ,as well as, completing puzzles and constructing and repairing projects. Charles was predeceased by his parents and four sisters, Jonell Seago, Leila Hoover, Laverne Wright, and Barbara Shealy.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years Mary Ann Hamblen Nichols, three children Marti Burns, Charles Stanmore Nichols, Fran Nichols, five grandchildren, Rachel Burns, Charles Grant Carey, Summer BurnsLawson, Allison and Charles Dylan Nichols, and six great grandchildren, Charles Elijah Brock, Charlotte Elois Rowe , Autumn Caroline Lawson, Violet Ada Lawson, Lilah Daye, and Jayce Benajmin Daye.

The family wishes to express their gratitude for the many kindnesses shown to us during his illness. Special thanks to Brenda and Desiree of MSA Home Health and hospice for the care given to Charles.
