Bruce Allen Otterbacher, age 70, passed away on January 26, 2026. Born on July 12, 1955, in Greenville, South Carolina, Bruce was the beloved son of the late Dale and Matilda Otterbacher.
Bruce lived a life defined by courage, dedication, and deep love for his family. A man of many hats, he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army, where he was part of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team — a role that required exceptional bravery and skill. His commitment to protecting others continued throughout his career. Bruce served as a member of the United States Secret Service before returning home to South Carolina, where he dedicated the remainder of his career to public service with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), retiring after years of honorable service to his state.
Beyond his impressive professional accomplishments, Bruce’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, son, brother, and a proud “Tata” to his grandchildren. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, loyalty, humor, and unconditional love that will continue to guide those who knew him.
Bruce was predeceased by his parents, Dale and Matilda Otterbacher; and his beloved grandson, Christopher Jordan Chaney.
Bruce is survived by his devoted wife, Jan Shirey Otterbacher; his siblings, Dale Otterbacher Jr. (Yong), Candy Nadeau, and Ron Otterbacher (Kathy); his children, Josh Dale Otterbacher (Rosario), Jennifer Chaney (Grant), and Brandy Ragan (Eric); his cherished grandchildren, Sebastian, Kristen, Elizabeth, Sara, Noah, Kourtney, Preston, Landon, and Jonathan; his precious great-grandchild, Arlo; and many beloved nieces and nephews who also held a special place in his heart.
Friends and family are invited to join in celebrating Bruce’s life at Congaree Baptist Church, located at 101 Pine Ridge Drive, West Columbia, SC 29172, on Friday, February 6th. Visitation will be held at 3:00 PM, with the service to follow beginning at 4:00 PM. The family looks forward to gathering with all who knew and loved Bruce to share memories, honor his life, and find comfort together. Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Lexington Chapel is assisting the family.
Bruce will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always loved.
