Barney Richard Koon

Barney Richard Koon, 79, of Gaston, died Thursday, October 23, 2025 at Lexington Medical Center. Born on December 22, 1945 in Newberry County, he was a son of the late John David Koon and Earnestine McCartha Koon.

Mr. Koon served in the Army National Guard of South Carolina. He was a lifelong member of St. Peter Lutheran Church. A machinist by trade, he was employed by Horsman Dolls, Kingston Metal, and Thermal Engineering Corporation during his career. He could fix almost anything and enjoyed driving his tractor and planting a big garden every year, then sharing the harvest with his neighbors and co-workers. He loved his animals and had a special cat, Mr. Deeds, who took him for a walk every afternoon at five o’clock.

Mr. Koon is survived by his wife; Jo Ann Koon, of the home; three sisters-in-law, Brenda Spires and Gloria Spires of Gaston, and Kathy Slice (Perry) of Pelion; a brother-in-law, Steve Spires (Judy) of Gaston; a nephew, Gerald David Koon, Jr. (Denise) of Little Mountain; a niece, Charlotte Ehney (Steve) of Greenwood; great nephews, Jon-Drayton Ehney (Anna Grace) of Chapin, Collin Ehney of Summerville; great nieces, Madelyn Koon of Travelers Rest, Meredith Koon of Little Mountain; and two great-great nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, Gerald David Koon, Sr. and Linda Epting Koon of Little Mountain.
