Alvin H. “Alvie” Gates, 80, of Lexington, SC passed away peacefully at home on June 6, 2022. Perpetually upbeat, and always trying to make folks smile with his unique songs, he will be deeply missed by his friends and family.
Born in Port Clinton, Ohio on September 4, 1941 to Wilbert and Ruth (Glaser) Gates, Alvie grew up on the family farms in Oak Harbor. He graduated from Salem-Oak Harbor High School in 1959 and married Karren (Helle) in 1963. Together they raised their children, Charles Christopher, Melissa Sue (Comley), and Meredith Ann (Cook). While he was a career truck driver, he maintained a passion for farming for many years, growing crops and raising cattle. After retiring from United Parcel Service in 2003, he and Karren spent time traveling, exploring the National Parks and spending the winter months in Florida. They relocated to Lexington in 2020.
In addition to his wife, children, and their spouses, Alvie is survived by grandchildren: Christopher Gates, Rachel Gates (Zach Watts), Tyler Comley, Grace Comley, Megan Cook, and Matthew Cook. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brother, Wayne Gates.
There will be a family celebration of Alvie’s life later this summer. Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Lexington Chapel, is assisting the family.
