Alston Brooks, 77, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026. He was born on November 13, 1948, in Union, South Carolina, the son of the late Rev. Clyde A. Brooks and Mrs. Thelma K. Brooks.
As the son of a Methodist minister, Alston spent his childhood living in many cities throughout South Carolina. Places that held special meaning to him included Swansea, Lydia, Johnston, and Anderson. Although he graduated from T.L. Hanna High School in Anderson, Alston often considered Johnston to be home.
Alston was a graduate of Anderson Junior College and the University of South Carolina. After completing his education, he made his home in Cayce, South Carolina, where he built a long and respected career in banking. He began as a National Bank Examiner and later worked with First National Bank, South Carolina National Bank, and Wachovia. After retiring from Wachovia, he continued his banking career with RBC and BB&T, ultimately retiring in 2018.
In addition to his professional career, Alston was deeply committed to mentoring others. He served as an instructor at the South Carolina Bankers School for more than 30 years, where he shared his expertise and passion for banking with countless bankers across the state.
Above all else, Alston was an incredible father and grandfather. He was always there for his family—no matter what—and his love for them was unwavering. He enjoyed traveling and was a devoted Gamecock fan. His love for the University of South Carolina, especially men’s basketball, will live on through his son and grandchildren. One of his most cherished memories was traveling to the Final Four in 2017 with his son, Jimmy and grandson, “Little Alston.”
Alston is survived by his son, Jimmy Brooks (Jennifer); and his grandchildren, Gracie and Alston Brooks.
In addition to his parents, Alston was predeceased by his brothers, Eddie Brooks and Ernie Brooks; and by his longtime partner, Mary Jane Taylor.
A celebration of Alston’s life will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 30, 2026 at Harmony Methodist Church, 98 Bouknight Road, Johnston, South Carolina 29832.
